Why Does Mrs. K Dress That Way?
The non-profit Part of It started by Chris and Kathleen Sleboda invites designers to design a t-shirt with the sales benefit a charity of their choice. My design stems from my interest in the t-shirt as a medium and cultural icon. The text comes from a 1960's print advertisement that Marshall McLuhan references in Understanding
Media. Mrs. K refers to then Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's wife, Nina Khrushchev, and her habit of wearing simple, inexpensive clothing to emphasize her solidarity with ordinary Russians. This t-shirt asks the viewer to consider the possible political implications of how you dress. Sales benefit the charity 'Dress for Success'.
